Not Economy, But Politics Is Key To Success

Politics and economy are the two main aspects in the functioning of any state. Politics refer to the process in with the rulers are elected, laws and policies are formulated and the same are implemented within a state. Economy, on the other hand, means the financial condition of a state. It is true to some extent that political system influences the economic system and vice-versa. But if we are to select either one of the two, it is, indeed, politics which is the key to success.

Before we proceed further and discuss how politics is key to success, let us first comprehend the meaning of success. Success in the national senses means the progress of the country and prosperity of its people. It means that the state has a respectful status in the eyes of civilized countries of the world. More importantly it has been able to maintain its sovereignty.

The most important objective of any state is the welfare of its people. People of a state are prosperous when they are able to live their lives according to their wishes. In other words, when they have freedom to profess and practice religion of their choice; freedom to enter into occupation. When the people of any state are satisfied and prosperous, it is indeed, one big step towards the progress and success of a state.

A Country is, but the collection of people. The more prosperous the people; the more developed the country is and thus, more successful it is. Sometimes, the prosperity of individual is dependent upon the advancement of country. Establishing infrastructure, building schools and colleges, providing medical care facilities are all steps towards the progress of a country. Similarly establishing industries and maintaining agriculture are all indicators of the national development. With national development comes individual development. But these developments are only possible if the country is able to protect its sovereignty.

The two most important function of the state are i) protecting its border from external aggression and ii) maintaining law and order to prevent any internal disturbance. If state fails in the performance of either of the two functions, it cannot be termed as a successful state; rather it will be a failed state.

Society does not always have threat from outside. It also faces existential threat from inside. As Thomas Hobbes said, “Men is brutal and nasty in the state of nature”. It is, therefore, imperative to make provisions to guide his conduct. State must endeavor to protect its citizens’ life, liberty and properly from the hands of its other citizens. The important indicator of any successful state is its track record in preventing and coping with attempts to take the life, liberty and property of its citizens.

Similarly, recognition, protection and promotion of human rights are also imperative. No state can truly attain the status of a successful state without respecting the rights of its citizen. Thus, we see that those states which enforce the rights of its citizens are more advance and successful than those which voluntarily curb the rights of its citizens.

Internal disturbances can only be prevented and human rights can only be promoted if there is a rule of law within a state. State must establish rule of law within its territory if it is to become a successful state. In the absence of rule of law, there shall be discrimination among citizens which would be fatal for national integration and consequently national development.

The last step in achieving a successful status is winning the respect of other states. A state which has earned a true respect from other states can rightly claim a status of successful state. In this globalized world, the interaction between the states is rapidly increasing. The states which are successful at homes, usually performs bigger role at the international level.

Now from the appraisal of what constitutes success in the national sense, let us take a look at how the politics is key to success. It may be reiterated here that success in the national sense is a broad term encompasses political social, economic, legal and international aspects of life.

The first thing which politics do is bringing political stability. Political stability then attracts investment in the country both from within and without. Investment is necessary for the development of any state as no country possesses all the resources to do each and every aspect of national work. It is the political stability and not the economic stability which turns the wheel of national development. Individuals, organizations and even countries do not invest at a place where law and order situation is fragile. Further, the places of high economic potential but without political stability are high danger zones. Even the economic potential, in the absence of politics does not contribute in the progress of the area. Thus, we have seen D.R. Congo despite possessing world’s wealthiest resources is a poor countries maiming due to inefficient and ineffective political system. Similarly the weak political stability of Baluchistan is hindering the efforts of government of Pakistan in utilitising the resources of the province. Political stability is, indeed, imperative for attracting investment, which is a catalyst of national development.

Presence of a deep rooted political culture promotes human rights. Respect of human rights is a pre-requisite for the progress of society. When the citizens fear the loss of the life or liberty or their belongings, they cannot be contribute in the development process. In fact, they will not be able to develop their own personalities in a proper way. Politics is an effective way to promote the rights of citizen. Human rights vary in degree i.e., they encompasses every aspect of human life. Economy only caters for the protection of economic rights. But politics through sound political system promotes every kind of human rights.

Corruption is rampant in every aspect of life. It is the biggest threat to the collective growth of society. If a political process is repeated after certain period, it acts as a valuable accountability tool for the ruling class. Economic system or economy cannot cope with corruption. It does not provide any effective tool for accountability, but unlike economy politics has its own ways and methods for accountability of those who are at the helm of affairs. For the prosperity of people and the progress of country, it is essential that there must be growth of all the members of society, rather than few occupying top positions. Only politics can deal with this problem. Economy is an abstract phenomenon whereas politics is a concrete one. Economy does not provide for the continuation of polities, but politics does. Similarly economic system has no tendency to adapt itself to the changing. Political system on the other hand, grows and evolves every day. Politics is dependent upon the opinion of public. It, therefore, take into consideration the aspiration of the people. It is for the people that success is to be achieved. Politics adhered to this principle. Economy, however, has no concerned for public opinion. Its main purpose is to generate maximum produce and thus profit. It can take any way whether right or wrong in achieving its objective.

As stated above, human desires and needs are multi-faceted. They not only require items which are necessary for survival, but also need other elements to lead a balanced life.

Economic system does not guarantee equality of citizen. It, in fact, stratifies the society on class system, thus, perpetuating inequality. It is the politics which maintains the equality of citizens and rules out any discrimination. Equality is one of the main duties of state toward citizens. Here too, politics perform this function and becomes a key to success. However, economy too performs some important functions in the national development which are summarized below.

Economic system provides for the orientation of society i.e., whether it will be class based or caste based. The scope of functions of economy is limited to the economic system. Development of the economy of a country has profound impact on the lifestyle of people. The more developed the economy is, the more prosperous the people are. Economic development creates employment opportunities for people, thus, increasing their living standard. It may, however, be pointed out that the economic development does not occur in isolation. It is dependent on the working of politics for its growth.

Similarly, the more prosperous the people are; the more progressed the country will be. With an enhanced economic capacity, status of country, no doubt, improves in the world community as everyone wants to work with the economically developed country.

The limitation of economy as a key to success is in its scope of operation. Economy only deals within the economic sphere. Human life, on the other hand, is complex. It includes the political, social, cultural, environmental, economic and legal spheres of life.

As we have discussed above, the important stimulus to growth and development is the absence of fear of losing one’s life and property. Economy does not prescribe rules for the preservation of life and liberty. It is the politics with has an over-arching influence on human life. Human beings need protection not only from external forces but also from their fellow citizens. A government with unlimited power is the worst form of tyranny. These problems can only be tackled through politics. Further, in the settlement of disputes it is the politics which guide the course of dispute resolution. Politics through politicians tell us whether to resort to force or enter into negotiations with others. such matters are absolutely outside the purview of economy.

Thus, it may be summaries that politics encompasses every sphere of human activity. Without politics there can neither be an individual prosperity not national development. Economy no doubt plays an important role in the individual and collective life of human being. It, however, lack the capacity to guide human conduct in every sphere of life. It is, therefore, the politics which is the key to success both for an individual and for a state.
